The remembrance series: 2009

I just moved out of my flat in London and came across many of the notebooks filled of scribbles that have accompanied me ever since I started carrying a purse. What to do with them? I’ve kept them all this years, and surely they keep many memories and perhaps even a few secrets - but in a clear out, what is not often used...must go.

I decided to hold on to some of them but made myself commit to actually getting some of their content on to my blog, and so begins the “remembrance series”...here we go, get ready for some random thoughts throughout!

"Snippets are from my time on NYC" - Early 2009
23rd & 7th. Old-crazy-looking lady. Seemed about to say something. I take my earplug out: “Yes?”. Eyes like plates: “You are lovely.” -Pause- “And cool.”
34th & 8th. Afro-american old man: “How tall are you?”. Me: “I’m sorry?”. Him: “H-o-w t-a-l-l a-r-e y-o-u?”. Me: “Mmmm...170 centimeters I guess?”. Him: “No. No. You are about 5’8. You are wearing flats. I like tall girls. If you wore stilettos you’d be tall. But it’s cool. You’re  wearing flats.”

"A day in NYC"
I’m not feeling too well since last night, so I stay in bed till past one. I slowly get up, put some clothes on and prepare to go to lunch. I don’t take a shower: I have yoga later and plan to take a shower after the class (I’m not just lazy but actually thinking I might save some water). So I go out and random things happen; I have good food, but my stomach doesn’t seem too happy about the quantity. Too much for the night we just had last night, I get it. On my way home I see a homeless man sitting in a corner, right on 23rd street and 7th avenue Uptown Metro Station. 1, 2, 3 lines I think. Anyways, as I take a closer look I notice he’s distracted and as I look a bit lower I notice he has his dark purple d...ck out and is giving himself a treat. “WHAT?!” - I geel disgusted and look for sympathetic eyes, but no one else seems to have noticed. I wait for a green light to cross the road, and struggle not to look back. I don’t want that image refreshed but I’m too curious as to what he is up to now. I look back, trying to put on a coolness image. He’s now putting “it” back in his pants (thank goodness) and looks disappointed. I can think of several reasons why he would be. Back at the appartment, I give myself a manicure (french tips) and what “Pay It Forward”. I cry hard. How could I not? Back out. Cofee, Tea, Smoothie, anything. Yoga class at 6. Time for a drink. Cross the door, the  cleaning lady c o mpliments my shoes, watching them as I walk out. I like it. The corner: that janitor that has a funny/scary look, the one I presume likes me “in that way” because he’s always staring at me at the gym. He’s buying presents for his 5 sisters, handbags, and needs my advice.

"Jealousy"
Oh no. Jelousy. I’m full of it. Ever since I was little I’ve been a jealous-kind-of-person. I would get jealous of my little cousins when they hugged my dad, of my friends in highschool when they exchanges notes with someone other than me. And now, with Max...oh no! I get jeoulos if I even think he fiends someone else attractive. I think he’s even afraid of it because of it. I try to fight it - being a jealous person hurts me more than anyone else, so I try, and I keep trying to change. Jealousy for me is a physical thing, I get hot and I can feel a thick rush of blood, boiling blood, coming from my feet straight into my head. My face gets all read; my palms get sweaty. I can’t  hide it.
I’ve read that jeaousy comes from insecurity. I don’t think that’s my case - I don’t consider myself insecure, and I reckon my jealousy comes from vanity. I’m so vain that I want to be the prettiest, the smartest, the sweetest. I cannot stand competition. This is very concerning. I have also heard that when a person is jealous and doubtful of their partner it’s because you fear your partner might be just as you are. I have often seen this and I think it makes good sense. I think in my case, it might make sense. Ok - it definitely makes sense. Well, it did before, when Maxi and I lived completely separate lives in different continents. Now it doesn’t anymore - we live together, I’m more in love than ever and there’s nothing I can want that he can’t give me. So, I’ve becomes less of a flirt, which I think is a good thing, a very good thing. And now that I think about it, I’ve become less jealous. I couldn’t say, to be fair, that I’ve overcome it - but it’s getting better. This is a part of my nature I will have to fight for life I’m sure.

"Guate" - NYC, March 26th 2009
Estoy bastante preocupada. Qué he hecho? Qué podriia estar haciendo? Qué haría si pudiera? … Mi respuesta: silencio, pesar lágrimas. No lo sé...(aún).

"Deceit"
I’m a master of deceit. Not really or maybe yes. It depends on how you look at it, as it does on everything; I don’t lie (or try really hard not to); I don’t cheat (or try really hard not to); and I don’t deceive. Well, not myself. My mind is filled with ideas that do better to stay there. If anyone could read my mind! I put on masks, so many different masks, of different shapes and sizes, tastes, colours, origins. That’s how humans cope with social interaction. Everyone has masks, and it works well for all of us. The only way I could take them off permanently would be if everyone else did as well. Kind of in the same way Rosseau’s social contract demansds for everyone to give up part of their freedom and if everyone truly complies, everyone stays as free as they were before.
So deceit...like I said, I master it. I hide so many secret desires, wishes and dreams...the most “wrong” ones. I put on a mask in front of my partner, one that expresses loe, passion, devoteness, faithfulness, honesty, monogamy. A mask, a beautiful mask, but a mask nonetheless. Inside, my skin is marked with filled and unfulfilled fantasies, desire for other men, hope for different ways of life, dreams of freedom. He doesn’t know - how could he? That mask I just mentioned does not come off around him. It only comes off sometimes when I’m by myself or with someone other than him. The reason? I don’t want to hurt him and I am not courageous enough to free myself from the wonderful love and life he offers me to try to pursue those hidden treasures of mine. Maybe the fact of them being “hidden”, “secret” & “wrong” is what makes them so desirable, so special, so valuable.

"Ticuquish" - Miami, March 30th 2009
I’m rather excited about seeing my Ticuquish. She’s sick and I still haven’t made peace with it; I still react rather wrongly to her clumpsyness, forgetfulness and rudeness. I feel really bad about it “it’s wrong” I tell myself, knowing it is not her, it’s her senile demency and her Altzheimers; but I haven’t been able to control myself just yet. I get angry and very upset, take my frustration out on her, taking myself from her, trying to foget the strong nature of our relationship. I miss her, I want her back; it’s a cruel game life plays on us, taking her little by little, leaving a scared-grumpy-old stranger behind. I haven’t seen her in months, I haven’t called her either. She wrote me once, through my mom. I didn’t answer directly. It hurts, but it’s no excuse. I will see her soon...and I’m hoping to take a new image of her back to London with me. A familiar one, a loving one. She doesn’t need to be a completely lucid one for me to love her as I have loved her for so long...she has earned it and it should be truly inconditional. We’ll see how it goes. I’m excited about seeing my Ticuquish.

"Otro"

"Pienso en ti" - London, sometime in late 2012

What Is Past Is Prologue...The Future What We Make Of It

Guatemala's civil war was long and very painful. The main problems that caused it, in the context of the cold war, are problems that lie deep within the country's history, society and identity. They are still there. However, we need to take our current challenges and confront them in the light of the present, and not based on experiences from our past; as open as our wounds are, these new challenges (I'm referring to drug traffic related violence specifically) are not going to go away easily. We will need a strong national front and we need to start now.

Guatemala's society still sees the army as an abusive institution as a result of the role it played during the civil war. While a country's army reason for existence is to protect it from foreign attack, it is subject to a government's directive, and we all know that a government can carry out actions against its own people, take Syria right now.

I would be lying if I said I'm not doubtful when it comes to the army myself; I'm my country's daughter and have seen it suffer under the army's abuse of power and impunity. However, I support President Otto Perez Molina's initiative to increase the army's budget and collaboration with the police and the US army to fight drug trafficking in the country.

I disagree with Francisco Dall’Anese's view when he says that “The army should take care of security of the country against attacks from a foreign power and never for citizen security”. The drug cartels that currently suffocate Guatemala and deepen its state of underdevelopment and ever rising violence are international organizations that should be taken as a foreign and domestic force. In the 21st century, the threats a state's sovereignty faces are no longer reduced to other states' ambitions; they include international criminal organizations such as a the drug cartels keeping Guatemala on its knees.

We do need the army. Guatemala's police force today is a corrupt and weak body that is unable to control even urban areas. How could we expect them to deal with a threat as complex and powerful as drug cartels of the likes of the Zetas? We need the army, we need the kaibiles, we need weapons, we need strategy and military intelligence.

Just as important as empowering our military forces is the need to make sure that this re-born army is a different institution to the one we had in the past. The necessary processes, training and checks need to be put in place to make sure that today's army's sole purpose is to return our country to stability, and that it carries its mission rid of its past misconceptions and irrespect for human rights and the law. Today's soldiers need to be enabled servants to our country. Educated, trained, controlled and penalized when necessary.

Guatemala's society needs to get better at recognizing the hole we are in and the urgent need to start working our way out of it. We need to look forward and we need to support the government, as much as we need to make sure it is held accountable for all the power we grant it to have.
